Medicare Supplement

More predictable coverage alongside Original Medicare.

Medicare Supplement Insurance, also called Medigap, can help pay certain out-of-pocket costs left by Original Medicare. Medigap is different from Medicare Advantage.

How Medigap fits into Medicare

With a Medigap policy, Original Medicare remains your primary coverage. The Medigap policy helps with certain deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments depending on the standardized plan you select.

Standardized plan letters

Most states use standardized Medigap plan letters. Benefits for the same letter are generally standardized, while premiums and underwriting practices can differ by insurer and situation.

Provider flexibility

Because Medigap works with Original Medicare, provider access is generally based on whether the provider accepts Medicare rather than a Medicare Advantage plan network.

Drug coverage is separate

Modern Medigap policies do not include outpatient prescription drug coverage. People who want drug coverage typically consider a separate Part D plan.

Medigap enrollment rights, pricing methods, availability, and underwriting rules can vary by state and by individual circumstances.
